What is topdress
and why do it?
You want to topdress
in early fall or early spring. Topdressing your lawn does the following:- Supplies beneficial microorganisms, bacteria and fungi
- Encourages healthy and disease resistant turf
- Increases soil organic matter
- Improves soil structure
- Helps grow strong routes
- Reduces compaction of heavy clay soils
- Aids in building a strong over winter foundation
- Increases water holding capacity during drought
- Lightens soil for better water movement
How to topdress, aerate your lawn first. Toss out a few shovels full of your premium compost into your lawn. Use the back of a hard rake to push the pile around and then the tines to rake the compost into your lawn. You want to be able to see your grass through the compost, the compost should be about 1/2" after spread. If you need to touch up bald spots in your lawn this would be the time to add grass seed.
