Pennsylvania Blue Stone

What is Pennsylvania Blue Flagstone?

Pennsylvania Blue Stone harvested only on the northern east coast between Pennsylvania and New York, is a high density natural product.  The stone is a sandstone and is a build up of sedimentary rock particles compressed together over many years.

Pattern flagstone comes from deep layers of a quarry.  Thermal flagstone is the most dense blue stone product.  Cubes are cut from the quarry then sliced horizontal.  Thermal or spalling occurs when the stone has been soaked with water and torched with a propane torch.  The end result leaves the stone smooth and completely even.  The large slabs are then cut into the pattern squares and rectangles.

Natural cleft Pennsylvania blue flagstone is left to air dry and does not go through the spalling process.

The term flagstone is just a general term.  It is in reference to a flat stone that is used for turf applications as in, patios, walkways or flooring.
